Talking about two events connected in the past:Originally Posted by Habibullah

We had eaten dinner, before John came home.
In other words, two actions/events happened in the past. The event that happened first (i.e. we ate dinner) is in the Past Perfect (i.e. had eaten).
Use this template:
First, _____, then ______.
EX: First, John had come home, then we ate dinner.
You could also use the word 'after':
EX: After John had come home, we ate dinner.
EX: We ate dinner, after John had come home.
Note that, John had came home is the first event. It happened first. Then we ate dinner. That is the second event. It happened second.
All the best, :D
