    Default usage of 'in which'

i had a student come to me and ask about how we use the phrase 'in which' , what is the grammatical term for this item?

an examle : i live in a city in which i work.

to me this isn't natural and normally i wouldn't say it like this but i think it's grammatically ok.
    any other clues??

    Hello.

My analysis would be that in your example "in which" is a prepositional phrase acting as a conjunctive adverb (i.e. it's equivalent to "where").

    Cheers

    John.

p.s. Don't forget to capitalise your sentences.

Which is a relative pronoun being used in a prepositional phrase.
BTW it should be 'the city'.
