    Buttered angel

«what a complete and awful smasher (and done like a "buttered angel")»

This is Charles Darwin speaking to Huxley about an article written against Owen...

    What is a Buttered Angel?

    Thanks!

    Re: Buttered angel

There is some kind of reference in a biography of Thomas Huxley by Adrian Desmond to "Buttered Angels and Bellowing Apes" - if you can get hold of a copy or get access to it online, you may find an explanation. However, on looking at the letter, it appears to mean that Huxley's reference to Owen was smoothly and neatly made.

OK, it seems to be the name of a chapter... Sounds good.

    There I go for it!
    Thanks for the reference
