    Welcome to the forums.

Could you explain what you mean by "academic slang"?

    Re: wander

Basically, you start by learning "received English" and as you become fluent you can use more idiomatic English and then slang terms.

There is a difference between using idiomatic phrases and slang.

    Re: wander

When learning English, I'd advise you to learn standard, academic English first. Trying to learn idioms, slang, and the correct usage of the two is like trying to ride a unicycle without knowing how to ride a bicycle.

While learning standard English, you'll slowly be able to catch on to more slang and colloquial English.
