    Proffer VS Offer

e.g. 1 He shook the warmly proffered hand.
e.g. 2 I didn't think it wise to proffer an opinion.
    Dear Teacher,

What is the difference between " proffer" and " offer"? Can I replace " proffer" with " offer" in above two example sentences?

I think " proffer" stresses the move of holding out. So for #1, I can not replace, but #2 is Okay. Right or wrong?

    Thanks in advance!

    Re: Proffer VS Offer

"Proffer" is specifically offering something by holding it out or to put something forward for either acceptance or rejection.

It is not replaceable with offer in your examples.

    Anglika,

Thanks for your illustration. In the below sentences I made, are they correct grammatically? And if yes, are the meanings of them same to each other?

    #1 I proffer you a gift.

    #2 I offer you a gift.

    Grammatically both are correct.

#1 I proffer you a gift. The expectation is that you will make a decision whether to accept or not

#2 I offer you a gift. The expectation is that you will accept.
