    cut corners

    Multiplayer online gamers have long cut corners by paying real cash for in-game goods that would take them hours of playing to earn.
    I understand what it means, but I thought that "to cut corners" meant to scrimp, to stint, not to do something seriously. Is the preceding meaning common?
