    Default need help on grammar

1.We were transferred back to the States three years ago, but I think
my parents would have liked to live overseas for at least 20 more years.
2.They probably would have mailed this, but I wanted to give it to you myself .

Could you tell me about how to use "Would + have +... " properly ?

    thank you in advance !

It's used to talk about something that didn't happen in the past- it's imagining something different from what actually happened. In your example, the facts are that your parents went back to the States, but the speaker is describing something imaginary- the parents' wishes.
