    Default Vexing question

If I had to ask what was the number (10th or 12th) of a current president in the presidents' list, what would the question sound like?

I am not a teacher, but I'd say:

What position on the list occupies the current US President?

    I have no idea!

To be honest, when posing this question to a classroom, it is usually asked with some prefacing information, such as "George Washington was the first president of the United States. What number president is George W. Bush?"

Was wondering if I could ask...

After how many presidents did Barack Obama come?

    [or somthing like that]

No, phrasing it that way isn't very clear. Perhaps it would be better to ask "Chronologically speaking, what number president was Barack Obama?"

After how many presidents does Barack Obama come (on the list)?

Ok, maybe this sentence is not that clear, but, is it grammatically right? Does it make any sence?

    Thanks
