    Can you actually use the verb meet this way?

    I would have thought : meet somebody

    find, come across, see....a word, expression

    Yes, the expression "meet a new word" would mean that I was introduced to a new word.

    I am not accustomed to using the expression "meet a new word." I would say that I "learned" a new word or "learned" a new expression. But I would never say that I "met" a new word.

    In a more slang sense, I would say that I "ran across" a new word.

    I would not have a problem with this. It is colloquial rather than formal English.
