    Default plural or singular verb?

1.What percentage of the people in the world ( is, are) illiterate?

I chose "are", because of " people" I think that is plural noun.
    But the answer is "is".

2.(Does, Do) any of you know the answer to that question?

I chose "Does", Because of "any". But the answer is "Do".

    I do not know why.

Whoever checked your answers and stated that they were wrong should go to school once again!
They are all correct, I mean is or are and Does or Do, respectively. The use of a singular verb is usually more formal.
