    According to 'Behind the Name' it is a modern Scottish form of John.

    John, or words that mean it (Ian, Ewan, Shane, Sean, Jean, Hans, Jan, Ivan...) is behind a lot of English names (borrowed from the many languages that have contributed to Modern English - not just given names like these, but also family names originally based on the father's name: Johnson, Evans, O'Shea (I'm guessing there, but it sounds probable ), McEwan, Hancock, Jennings...
