    I agree with this- the girlfriend example is a good one. In speech the differences could be conveyed through intonation, with the teacher, but with the girlfriend, I'd hope that the love was singular.

    Hmmm- there are many discoveries by people who weren't youths- Darwin, Mendel, etc.

    It may be that the fact that the old, the experienced, made scientific discoveries dosn't have much appeal for the author.
