Default Knowing his ass from his elbow

"You never knew if he was nodding a lot because he was thinking and all, or just because he was a nice old guy that didn't know his ass from his elbow."

What does it mean if you don't know your ass from your elbow?

Could you provide another example in use please?

not know one's arse from one's elbow(v)<slang><impolite> to know nothing.
The Dictionary of Informal, Colloquial, Slang and Idiomatic Phrases by Hakan Senturk. -A-

e.g. Haven't you read his posts on football?! he clearly doesn't know his arse from his elbow.

If you need more examples, put your key words into Google searching box and you will fish more.

    Hope this helps.

NB: I am not a teacher.

It means the person is very stupid, not knowledgeable, incompetent, or all of those.

It took him all day to fix the TV, but the picture is still very poor. I don't think he knows his ass from his elbow.
