    swimming on the pond

Can someone explain why we say "swimming in the lake" but "ducks are swimming on the pond"
How about boats, ships? Pepositions are really confusing to me sometimes.
    Thanks in advance!

    Hi,
Ducks, ships, boats etc. sit, more or less, on the surface of a lake, the sea etc. Whereas, people, and other animals, swim in the lake, sea etc.
