If one asks Swedes why there are so many jobless black Africans they would probably mention dozens of reasons. For example they can say that Africans are not punctual, their mentality is different, they speak Swedish with difficulties and lose their temper at the drop of a hat. Maybe some of these opinions are right, but the fact is that 90% of Somalis in Sweden do not work while in the USA 90% of them work. Somalis who have languished in Swedish ghettos for years without ever getting a chance, suddenly when they have moved to the UK or other countries have no problems at all to find a job.
How come that the same people behave differently? The answer is that in Sweden they were kept like animals in a Zoo. Swedish government is using the same words as the South African apartheid regime. They both tell the Blacks that they live in the best conditions in the world. I remember the case of a young African woman who has come to Sweden as a child. Swedish was the first language she has learnt and she speaks it without an accent.
A hotel in the South needed a receptionist. She called the manager and he was delighted. He sounded friendly and honest and told her that the position was still vacant. However, she did not tell him anything of the colour of her skin. Next day she knocked at his office and when he saw her, his face darkened. The friendly tone of his voice had disappeared and he told her that unfortunately, the position had been filled. When the African woman started to ask him how it was possible that he told her something different on the telephone he did not want to talk to her. Later, a journalist called him on the telephone and the man explained that because his hotel was Swedish he needed a Swedish looking person. And who is a Swedish looking person? According to him it was a blond women with wavy hair and blue eyes.
Of course, there are laws against discrimination but what can you do when a person one is talking to, smiles and tells you unfortunately, the position is not vacant any more. Who has enough strength and energy to spend it on the complicated court proceedings? By the way, independent investigations have shown that immigrants are also discriminated in courts and their words have not the same credibility as the Swedes. So even the court can mean a lottery where everything is possible.
For an immigrant it is often not easy to find a flat outside the ghettos. If one does not have a well paid job and enough money to buy his own flat the only solution is to hire it from some of the housing companies. If an immigrant calls the company and asks them about the vacant flats it is highly possible that the answer will be negative. Suppose that his girlfriend calls the same company and the it will probably be the different story. The truth is that if the housing company has to choose between the Swedes and the immigrants they would always decide for the first.
There were many cases when people with wrong colour of their skin and hair wanted to visit a night club and suddenly, on the door a muscular bouncer would stop them and told them that unfortunately, this evening it was a private celebration, or one needed to be a member of the club, or one had to be invited and had his name put on the list...The immigrants would look with astonishment at the other people, the majority of them Swedes entering the club without any difficulties, while they themselves felt like second class citizens who even could not have fun one Saturday evening only because of their "wrong" colours. Finally, about three years ago a group of students have succefully won their case in the court, proving all their statements with video images. They could not come inside the fashionable Stockholm's night clubs only because the owners did not want so many immigrants in their places believing that if they were too many, the Swedes would stay away.
All these things probably happen because in reality Swedish people are not so favourable of immigration at all. Their governments never asked them about their opinion, never cared what they thought. Only once they could have openly said their opinion of this issue which is still a taboo in this country. A Swedish paper called "Expressen" conducted a poll in 1991, asking their readers about the immigrants. And the result was written in big red letters on the front page, "Throw them all out!"
