Default A long time ago what did the writer's boss suggest the writer could do ?

A long time ago what did the writer's boss suggest the writer could do?

We have to answer what the writer's boss suggested to the writer could do (1) or we should answer when the writer's boss suggested it to him (2)?

I'm confused.. I would choose the first one.

    Thanks in advance, mates.

I am also a bit confused. What are you doing - answering a grammar problem or writing an essay?

In fact, someone asked it in order for me to answer - but I must admit that question sounds quite odd to me.

A long time ago what did the writer's boss suggest the writer could do?

It is a poorly worded sentence, and hence the confusion. It starts with the time phrase which is quite a secondary fact here, when the main communication is 'what did the boss suggest'

What did the writer's boss suggest, a long time ago, that the writer could do?

With my awkward English, I would also have rephrased it by adding a comma and to:A long time ago, what did the writer's boss suggest to the writer could do?

It is good of you, David. Thanks a lot.

    Then:

A long time ago, what did the writer's boss suggest to the writer that he could do?
