    establishment = household

    Dear teachers,

    Would you be kind enough tell me whether the terms in bold in the following brief excerpt of the Oscar Wilde’s “The importance of being earnest” are 100% interchangeable in common English?

    Algernon. Why is it that at a bachelor's establishment the servantsinvariably drink the champagne? I ask merely for information.
    Lane. I attribute it to the superior quality of the wine, sir. I haveoften observed that in married households the champagne is rarely of afirst-rate brand. Thank you in advance for your efforts.

    Regards.

    V.

    An establishment is a business, a household is a home.

    Re: establishment = household

    A bachelor had an "establishment" - usually rented rooms with one manservant in attendance - not a home or a household, which implied family. It is one of those old distinctions that is now lost.

    Re: establishment = household

    Hi Anglika,

    Thank you for your penetrating reply. It corroborates the very questionable allegation of my old English-Bulgarian dictionary about the identity of both terms in bold (see my original post above). I see this allegation is not a question of the present days and stands good only for old-fashioned people like me.

    Thank you again for your backing.

    Regards.
