    Smile TESOL/Applied Linguistics Masters

    Dear All,

Can anybody offer me advice about a good place to do an MA in the UK?

Has anybody recently done an MA in TESOL or Applied Linguistics? Can you give me some feedback on the course?

Does anybody know anything about the reputation or course quality of the University of Reading?

I have 5 years teaching experience including EAP, a CELTA and a Trinity Diploma.

    Thanks for your help.

    Re: TESOL/Applied Linguistics Masters

The MA in TESOL (TESL) is a SERIES of courses in teaching. The first part is a core course of English phonology, morphology, syntax, grammar, and maybe tranformational grammar (sentence diagramming).

Then they make you take a series of courses to see how well you can teach the above subjects, with a few courses in teaching methodology thrown in (descriptive or prescriptive grammar?) (TPR or silent method?) content based or performance based?

Then they make you write a MA thesis (or a comprehensive exam if you're lucky).

What makes you want to get a degree in an expensive place like the UK?

    Thanks Hinomura .

I am from the UK so that's why I want to study there.

I don't think most UK MAs include teaching practice. How long is the MA in the USA? I hadn't thought of doing it there before. Have you done yours?

Anybody out there who has done an MA in the UK and can make recommendations.

    Thanks

I did mine at Kings College London, and although I had problems with how dogmatic some of the lecturers were, a big plus was that they gave you credit for a Diploma that cut the course down from 2 years to 15 months (part time).

I did mine at the IOE; it was OK but not the most exciting course.
