    Default another SAt question

As a teen, Jacob really despised doing his chores; in fact he considered them a(n)______ rather than a natural part of daily life
    a) exoneration
    b)reward
    c)amercement
    d) pretense
    e)noxious
My answer was c. But the book said it is e. Here is its explanation:
"In fact singals restatment or that an example will follow. If Jacob despised doing chores, it makes sense he would consider them an amercement, or a punishment"
So, if we follow its explanation, the answer must be c, because e is adjective?

That is not a word you will meet in normal usage! It is a legal term meaning:

1.to punish by imposing a fine not fixed by statute. 2.to punish by inflicting any discretionary or arbitrary penalty.
So technically none of the options is correct.

Then, its meaning does not fit. Why chores is an noxious part of life? And the explanation certainly did not support that idea (e) too
