    I would be interested in knowing where "Pte/PTE" was seen. I found it listed at PTE - What does PTE stand for? Acronyms and abbreviations by the Free Online Dictionary., but I have never seen or heard of it before now.

    In my experience, it is either "Pvt" (the very bottom rank) or "PFC" (Private First Class, the next step up), and that's official only in the US Marines. The Army uses the official designations PV1 and PV2, though "Pvt" and "PFC" do appear.

    But, the closest I ever got to the military was Sea Scouts, so what do I know about it?

    It is the standard British army abbreviation for "Private".
