    now and again

Well, I guess it's frequently used "every now and again". I tried to find its meaning; it means sometimes but not often. It was the oppsite of what I understand before looking for its diffinition.
Please, provide me with some extra examples if possible.
    Thanks in advance.

    Not often.

We used to have lunch together, every now and again.
Every now and again we get a day off work.
"I didn't know you smoked," said Mike. "Every now and again," Steve replied.
