    Question Simple Sentence

A complex sentence is by definition a sentence that contains one dependent clause attached to another indepedent clause.

    * The below sentence is simple. I thought that the below underlined string of words is a dependent clause, but it's not. What is it then?

Eg: Bob and Sue went to the store on the corner near the center of town to buy groceries and to get some drinks for the party.

So, it this a simple sentence?.

Eg2: lying exposed without its blanket of snow, the ice on the river melts quickly under the warm march sun.

what function does the underline string of words hold?

Not necessarily one. There can be several dependent clauses.

Eg: Bob and Sue went to the store on the corner near the center of town to buy groceries and to get some drinks for the party.

    This is a simple sentence.
    The subject: Bob and Sue
    The predicate: went

The underlined fragment is two homogeneous adverbial modifiers of purpose expressed by infinitive phrases.
