Help with proper use of mean/means?

    Hi All,

We are havin a dissagreement on the proper use of mean/means.

Have Googled but found nothing uselful.

Which of the following sentences is correct, and more importantly, why?

1 - "The fact that they both arrived here mean that we have received what we ordered"

2 - "The fact that they both arrived here means that we have received what we ordered"

Any links to "proof" would be much appreciated!

    Thanks,

    Steve from Australia.

The subject of "means" is "fact". Since "fact" is third person singular, the verb must be too.
"that they arrived here" is a subordinate clause with its own subject and verb. The main clause is "The fact means"
