    Default character or characters

I am not sure about the use of the word "character."
Which should I use, singular or plural form in the case below.

Since I've been living outside Japan for two years, I've become more conscious about the Japanese character.

If I use "characters" instead of "character," is it wrong?

    I appreciate your help.

    Definitely stick with the singular.

If you use the plural, it sounds like you're referring to many quirky, slightly odd people of Japanese origin. (See definition #7 here: character - Definition from the Merriam-Webster Online Dictionary)

I think you probably mean 'Japanese culture' there, which is also singular.
