Smile past continuous or present perfect

    Hi dear experts,
Which tense should I use in the following sentence:

    1. "I was always wanting him to approve of me."
    2. "I have always wanted him to approve of me"

Re: past continuous or present perfect

You are actually asking the wrong question.

Each sentence uses a different tense, and each sentence is correct.

The question is, in what context would each sentence be appropriate? What is the difference in meaning?

Re: past continuous or present perfect

"I was always wanting my father to approve of me, but whatever I did, he always made it seem that in comparison with my older brother, I was a failure somehow. Now he's dead...and I bet he's up there right now, looking down, and telling everyone in Heaven how much better my brother would have organized his funeral than I."
