    broke/had broken down

    Hi,
Is it correct to use the past perfect in the sentence? Do I need "the" in the phrase "whole time"?
"Carson's trailer had broken down, so he and Polly stayed in the motels whole time."
    Thank you.

"Carson's trailer had broken down, so he and Polly stayed in motels the whole time."

You don't need "the" before "motels", you do need "the" before "whole time."
