Question What is meaning of 'stick it back in the hole' ?

    Dear Teacher,
    Here is a sentence:
When students sharpened their pencils, if a piece of lead an eighth of an inch long fell out they would stick it back in the hole.
I do not understand 'stick it back in the hole'. Is it a idiom? Help me to explain, please.
    Thanks,
    G.

It's not an idiom. Take a look at a picture of a pencil sharpener. It has a hole for the pencil: pencil sharpener - Google Image Search

    Dear Teacher Soup,
Do you mean students to sharpen their pencils with pencil sharpener for 'stick it back in the hole'?

Sorry. I misunderstood. The meaning of 'stick it back in the hole' refers to the hole in the pencil that is left when the tip of the lead falls out. That is, the student puts the lead tip that had broken off back into the top of the pencil.
