Default to evaluate or for evaluating

The discovery should give scientists a test case for evaluating hypothesis about the state of the Earth's crust at the time these naturally occuring fullereness were formed.

What if 'to evaluate' is used in situ for 'for evaluating'? Does that change the meaning or intent or tone of the sentence?

You could use either, but whichever is used, it should be followed by "the hypothesis" or by "hypotheses". It is possible that there is a typo in "hypothesis".
