Default Why do we need past perfect in the following sentences?

    hello

The Past Perfect expresses the idea that something occurred before another action in the past. But I donít understand why past perfect is used in the following sentences:

    1.

ĎHe hadnít passed the driving test when he drove from San Francisco to LA.í

    a) First of, driving from San Francisco to LA happened before the fact that he failed at driving test, so if anything, past perfect should be used in a when clause:

ĎHe didnít passed the driving test when he had driven from San Francisco to LA.í

    b) Second, I donít understand why even use past perfect, since I donít think this is not one of those sentences where comparing actions chronologically is the focal point of the sentence?!

    2.

ĎWhen I got home, I remembered that I had left the baby in the shop.í

    a) Isnít the following more correct, since we first get home and only then we remember Öthus arriving home happens prior to remembering:,

'When I had got home I remembered that Ö'

    b) why is had left the baby in the shop in past perfect? Past perfect is used when something happened before another action, but here we arenít comparing this action ( forgetting the baby ) chronologically to any other action!

    thank you

    Try it another way:

He hadnít passed the driving test when he drove from San Francisco to LA.í

At the time he drove from San Francisco to LA, he had not passed the driving test.

Re-phrase to get a sense of time:

When I got home, I remembered that I had left the baby in the shop.í

I remembered that I had left the baby in the shop. I remembered it when I got home.
