    Default landmarks = reference points

    Dear teachers,

    Would you be kind enough to revise my interpretation of the expression in bold in the following excerpt from an English book.

    Alvan Hervey was almost soothed by the deliberate pace of his thoughts. His moral landmarks were going one by one, consumed in the fire of his experience, buried in hot mud, in ashes.
    landmarks = reference points

    Thank you for your efforts.

    Regards,

    V.
