Would you be kind enough to interpret the expression “American promise” which confused me yesterday by reading NYT’s article “Obama Takes the Fight to McCain”.
Barack Obama accepted the Democratic Party presidential nomination on Thursday, declaring that the “American promise has been threatened” by eight years under President Bush and that John McCain represented a continuation of policies that undermined the nation’s economy and imperiled its standing around the world.
On the one hand “promise” = something promised, or indication of something favorable to come; expectation,or indication of future excellence or success.
On the other hand I could think about “American dream” = an American ideal of a happy and successful life to which all may aspire, i.e. a phrase connoting hope for prosperity and happiness.
Thank you for your efforts.
"promise" here means the possibility of future excellence or success, potential excellence.
