Post as the staging ground for his supposed madness

In the sentence below, what does "staging ground" mean?

He's reading, all right, but he's doing it for show, using the interiority of reading as the staging ground for his supposed madness.

Staging ground is the starting point. It is a place where something is planned or initiated!

    Cheers,
    Amigo

Basically it means the stage on which he demonstrates his madness.

I think this is a staging post. Do you have a reference for your definition?

From staging post definition - Dictionary - MSN Encarta

    staging post

U.K. place where travelers stop briefly: a place where people on a long trip stop off to take a break from travel, especially on an air route

I would be interested to see Amigos's source for his definition of staging ground.
