    Default Pronounciation of Letter I

    hello:

My name is Omar Medina. My first language is Spanish. I have a question regarding the rule or exception on the pronounciation of letter I. Case in point, PRINT (print)-PRIME (PRAIM)...when does "i" get different form of pronounciation?

    Thank you,

    Thank you,
As a general rule, if the word ends in a silent "e", then it's /ai/ as in:
prime, mine, time, wine, nice, imbibe, tide, wife, pile, mime, mile, wipe, wire, wise, cite, alive.
In general, almost all words ending in "e" end in a silent "e".
"i" is also /ai/ in the following:
light, might, night, fight; sigh, high.

In words ending in the following, it's /i/
ia, ib, ic, id, ig, im, in, ip, is, it, ix.

    That's just a few rules.
