Default pan = to criticize or review harshly

    Dear teachers,

Would you be kind enough to help me interpret the word in bold in the following excerpt from an entertainment news?

“Britney Spears won three top prizes at the MTV Video Music Awards in Los Angeles Sunday after delivering a widely panned performance at the 2007 VMA show. “

I know at least three different meaning of the word in question but in the present case I give preference to the third one.
pan (v) 1. To wash (gravel, for example) in a pan for gold or other precious metal.
    2. To cook (food) in a pan: panned the fish right after catching it.
    3. Informal. To criticize or review harshly.

    Thank you for your efforts.

    Regards,

    V.
