    Smile Does "Yeah" sound rude?

Hello! I watched an American film--Miss Congeniality. In the film, a beauty contest consultant with British-accent admonished a tomboy who wanted to enter a beauty contest that she should answer "yes", but not "yeah" which is considered not well-spoken and impolite. Is it true? Thanks!

Whether it is rude would depend on the intonation; it could be regarded as brusque, or ill-educated, or just too informal for the occasion.
