Default The rule of sequence of tences (modal verbs)

    Dear friends,

I have read in my textbook this phrase:
They may have thought that we won’t come in this rain.

The question (my question, not the task to do) is whether “would” would be correct here. That is I suppose there is a mistake here. Anyway, how does the rule of the sequence of tenses work here? And where could I read about future after “may + perfect infinitive”?

Thank you in advance for your kind attention.

    Michael

This is far more common and natural:
"They may have thought that we wouldn't come in this rain." (So, I agree, if you meant 'wouldn't.)
Sorry, I can't think of a grammar page for your explanations.
