    Help: "did not update" or "have not updated"

    Can anyone please tell me the differance between "did not update" or "have not updated" ?If possible please give some example.

    It is a subtle difference, "I did not update the file." states clearly that I didn't do the work, end of story, I am probably not going to do it. "I have not updated the file." leaves open the possibility that, although I haven't yet updated the file, I intend to do it very soon.

    can we use "did not update" in case of past action and "have not updated" in case of present action ? Is my guess is correct?
