Question This is the first time....

Which tense should I use in these sentence?

    1. This is the first time I (play)_____ tennis.
    2. That was the first time I (play)_______tennis.

Well, I'm a little bit confused and can't figure out whether I should use Simple past or Present Perfect.
Could anyone please help me and explain why as well?

    Thanks.

Re: This is the first time....

Well the answer is as simple as the simple present that you can definitely use in that sentence.

    No additional complications.
Alternatively if you are a rather finicky and exigent person you can always add the adverbs "ever" or "very" to hyphenate your statement.

--> This is the first time I "ever" play tennis.

--> This is the "very" first time I play tennis.

    Warm regards.

    As I know, we say:
This is the first time I've played tennis.
That was the first time I played tennis.

Re: This is the first time....

a modern languages major is simply a sudent of modern languages. It's a technical academic denomination for a student involved in that field of studies.

P.S. There is an apodictic nuance in meaning between "This is the first time I play tennis" and "this is the first time I've played tennis".

The first purports the idea that you are just about to have a first attempt at playing tennis (for example, you're in a tennis field and are to use your racket for the first time. In that case you can exclaim: "This is the first time I play tennis")

On the other hand if you're still playing or if you "have" just had a go at playing tennis, there you can say : This is the first time I've played tennis.

when you specify temporal details you must use the simple past.

Have I managed to convince you?

    All best.
