    He crept (up) behind the girl.
    Does the preposition up change the meaning of this sentence in any way?

    Yes, "up" adds the fact that he's getting closer to her.
    "He crept behind the girl." means he could be keeping the same pace as her.

    ...And you can use the phrasal verb 'creep up on' to refer to the passage of time. 'You'll find that age creeps up on you. All of a sudden you catch yourself being surprised at how young policemen look.'
