    auto state

    Good afternoon,

    Reading this article on politics, I wasn´t able to grasp the meaning on the sentence: ¨between the anti-regulatory Republicans and the auto-state
    Democrats, we´re outgunned.¨
    Auto-state would be the same as saying self-sufficient?

    No, it means the Democrats from Michigan - the "auto[mobile] state"
