    Re: restrictions and limitations?

Although often used as synonyms, in other instances the restrictions suggest that others (legal authorities, etc) have imposed the limits, conditions, regulations, whereas limitations are more inherent. There are restrictions against hunting out of season, etc. Limitations might mean I am not strong enough or tall enough to accomplish the task; a weakness that inhibits performance.

There are restrictions to his job responsibilities and limitations of his job, as well. Different prepositions, although I'm not sure if there is a clear difference in their meanings in this case.

    Thanks!

Then in the following sentence, which one is better?

...We hope that the UnitedStates will recognize China's full market economy status, liftrestrictions on commodity and technology exports to China...

    Smile Re: restrictions and limitations?

Restrictions and limitations can be slightly different at non-elementary Math, but people don't care (they shouldn't) and use both interchangable!

    THANKS A LOT!

Here is the context, which is taken from our interpreting book. Its original is Chinese.

It takesthe efforts of both China and the United States to address their economic and trade frictions. We hope that the UnitedStates will recognize China's full market economy status, lift restrictions on commodity and technology exports to China andcorrect the wrong practices of trade protectionism. Increasingexports to China, instead of restricting imports from China, is the right course of action to solve trade imbalances.

    Re: restrictions and limitations?

And, as forecast, restrictions here suggests there were government regulations in place, rather than the inability to produce.
