Smile large boxes of freebies in church porch

Since mid-September the countryside has been awash with apples. The blackbirds are feasting daily, making great inroads into the windfalls, and in the church porch there are large boxes of freebies (bags supplied). At home our own harvest has been good from all three of our Bramley trees: one a gnarled veteran of many generations, one a 10-year-old stripling, and in the front garden one of the very few genuine descendants of the original Bramley tree, first raised in Nottinghamshire in 1810.

    Hello!

large boxes of freebies in church porch = church goers donated a lot of things, and other people can get them for nothing?

    Thanks!

Yes; a freebie is something you don't have to pay for, so you can take some apples for free when you visit the church.

I rarely disagree with susiedqq, but "in the porch" is fine. The boxes are in the church porch, which is probably much like this one: http://www.nottshistory.org.uk/image...porch-2005.jpg

Excellent illustration! Yes, it does change the concept ever so slightly, and the preposition completely!
