    to open/close an account?

    Hi,

I'd like to have a bank account but I don't know how to express myself to the guy that works for the bank.

Should I say "I'd like to open an account, please."?

Now, suppose I already have an account in the bank and I want to stop having that account. Should I say "I'd like to close my account, please."?

    Thanks.

Open and close are words we frequesntly use when referring to starting and cancelling bank accounts.

    Your questions are 100% correct.

    I am not a teacher.

For sure, the bank person is going to ask:

    "What kind of account?"

    savings
    checking
    debit card
    credit card
    loan

    Hi,
I think what I need is a debit card account. I need an account to have my wages deposited in it, draw some money when necessary and pay things by using a debit card.
    Thanks.

In the US, that would be considered a checking account.

Using your debit card is just like writing a check. Most banks in the US won't charge fees for such an account if you sign up for direct deposit for your paycheck. Make sure you shop around to make sure your bank won't charge you a fee for your account. There are still plenty of free checking options out there. Also make sure they won't limit the number of times you can use your debit card in a month.

Thanks A LOT indeed for your advice!
Just for the sake of curiosity, what would be a ''debit account'' in the US?
    Thanks again!

    Re: to open/close an account?

I have to be honest: I'm not familiar with an account that uses ONLY a debit card. They may well exist (without paper checks being part of the picture), but I'm not familiar with them. If they do, they're probably known as "debit accounts."

Things get even more confusing when you use a credit union instead of a bank. I'm not smart enough to explain the differences!
