    Default sitting pretty

Once my coordinator asked me how everything was, and I replied: Im sitting pretty. I thought it meant everything was okay, but then she told me: Why? Do you want to lose your job? I never understood it... What does sitting pretty exactly mean?

Hmm. You're interpretation is fairly accurate, but maybe it was one of three things.

    1. Maybe your coordinator didn't like your cocksure response. You have told her that you are quite secure in your position. Perhaps a bit more polite response would have been, "I'm learning quickly and really enjoying my job."

    2. Maybe your coordinator was teasing you, and taking a literal translation, suggesting that if you just sit on your pretty *** all day, you aren't doing your job.

    3. Maybe your coordintor didn't understand the idiom.

Seriously, though, that expression is more often used in reference to someone else, and often with envy in your heart. The owner's son got the job you wanted: "he's sitting pretty." It's not used to describe yourself, unless you are gloating.

It makes the whole sense... I remember having looked it up in the dictionary a long time ago, and I read what you wrote... I first saw this expression in the lyrics to the Beatles` I am the walrus (Mr. City policeman sitting pretty little policeman in a row...)

Another meaning is that you are "in a position which is to your advantage". Another phrase you might like is "cat-bird seat".
