    witness to

    Hi everyone,
"Everybody is witness to the way the elections took place yesterday,
peaceful because there was no violence and free, because there was no intimidation".
    Is this sentence correct?
    thank you

    Re: witness to

If the elections were yesterday, then it should be "was" instead of "is."

It's more common to say "saw" instead of "was witness to" but your version does have a lot of style.

And because of the style that Barb mentioned, I'd punctuate it differently

"... took place yesterday: peaceful because ... ".
    "... took place yesterday - peaceful because ... ". (An M dash)

This alerts the reader that a passage of importance is to follow.
