Do you mean by that, can we always spell what we hear?

My question is the following: If you heard some English sentences form someone and
you did not understand it well can you write these sentences down to read or look up a dictionary later?

I cannot think that I would not be able to write down what I heard. Possibly I might mis-hear something and write down something that was wrong. However, there is no point looking in a dictionary if you cannot understand the sound of the word.

Some words can of course be confused as they are hononyms, but the context of the sentence ought to indicate which word is correct.

Hanky, do you mean you want to know how to ask native speakers to write down what they've said so that you can check the meaning of the sentences later on?

Many of us who are learning English can understand texts fairly well, but find it almost impossible to understand what a native speaker is saying.

Hi, I think what Hanky trying to say is "Will native speakers write down any word or phrase that they heard and look it up in a dictionary later if they don't understand it."

Good point! I wouldn't necessarily write it down, but might check it later.

I'm not sure about what he really meant but similar thing happens to me especially in lectures. When the lecturer said a completely unfamiliar word,I both can't understand and can't write it down to check it later as the word is unfamiliar I don't know how to spell it. Is there any way to guess the spelling to write the word down without telling the lecturer to spell it again. What do native speakers do in that case?
