    Question Sign out (borrowing book)

sign sth out phrasal verb [M]

to record when you take something away, usually by signing your name in a book:

You have to sign books out when you borrow them from the library.
Cambridge Dictionaries Online - Cambridge University Press

Hello! I want to learn how to sign the name in a book. Where do people sign their names in the book? The first page? If there are 100 hundred persons who borrowed the same book and they signed the book, will the book look in a mess?

    Thanks!

    Re: Sign out (borrowing book)

You don't sign your name in the book you are taking. That wouldn't leave a record that you had it. You'd have the book, so you'd have your signature. If you never brought it back,no one would know who had it.

But in practice, no one ever signs anything anymore. It's all on the computer. They scan my library card, then scan the books I'm taking out, and the computer keeps track of who has which books.
