    witness/witnesses

    Hi,
    everybody was witness to ..
    or
    everybody was witnesses to..
    which one is correct?

    With a plural subject you could say 'they were all witnesses' (but even there the singular would be possible, as 'witness to' works as a numberless collocation. But, for your second sentence I'd just say 'everybody saw' anyway

    witness is the appropriate word here, as everybody is a collective word, using singular verbs.
