    participle I, II or gerund?

    Dear teachers,

Would you be kind enough to tell me the nature characteristic of the words in bold in the following sentences?

    1. He sat in the armchair reading a newspaper.
    2. On reading the letter I put it into the drawer.
    3. The man crossing the street is my brother.
    4. They stopped to admire the stream winding away among the trees.
    5. Withholding the money asked of us in the form of extra rents is also our last weapon.
    6. He had received an urgent message asking him to telephone Sir Matthew.
    7. He saw the figure of old Seraphine coming towards him.
    8. He was like an imvalid come downstairs after a long illness.

    Thank you for your efforts.

    Regards,

    V.

Re: participle I, II or gerund?

    Hello Vil,

    #2 is a gerund; #4 is a present participle; #8 is a past participle.

Would you like to try the others, on that basis?

    Best wishes,

    MrP

Re: participle I, II or gerund?

    Hi Mr.Pedantic,

    Thank you for your co-operation.

There is my speculation concerning the rest of the sentences in my original post:

    #1 participle I
    #3 participle I
    # 5 participle II
    #6 participle I
    #7 participle I

Thank you again for your kindness.

    Regards,

    V.
