    Question N-e-w-s

What do you think of this word, news?

    1. A plural form of new?
    2. Would you consider "new" a noun? Or pronoun?
    3. It has nothing to do with plural; it's simply a word itself.

    Cool.

news is a noun, so it's not the plural of the adjective 'new'. Historically, though, news did in fact come from the adjective 'new': singular 'new' (new thing), plural 'news' (new things). Click here for its etymology.

According to Oxford's Dictionary of Current English, news is a plural noun that's usually treated as singular.

    Cassie,

I've seen the etymology before you post it. Have you heard that news stand for North, East, West and South. News that comes from 4 corners of the world. I quite like this explanation but some might disagree with it.

PS. Did you have serious earthquake tonight? We did. It was horrible. Mom and I still felt dizzy 10 minutes after the shock.

    I've also heard that.
